Job Description

1. Your first job will be to listen and learn as much as possible about the general routine of working in Horticultural Services. You will learn as much from your trained and experienced co-workers as you do from your supervisor. The safety of our team members is our top priority and an untrained employee is a danger to himself and others. 2. You will be working each day to carry out the tasks involved in producing various greenhouse plant crops, many of which will be later installed on campus by other crews. The greenhouse team is also responsible for 6-7 retail sales per year featuring Poinsettias, Easter Lilies, Fall Pansies and Mums, Winter-blooming gift plants, Spring bedding plants, vegetables, and tropicals. Your tasks may involve the preparation of potting mix, potting of young plants, sowing and transplanting of seed, working with customers, and cleaning of the facilities. 3. Our team is additionally responsible for the maintenance of the 6-acre Horticulture Gardens adjacent to the Greenhouse area. You will be trained on each piece of lawn and shrub-maintenance equipment, and will be involved in the landscape design and planting throughout the seasons.

Job Requirements

This is a position for a first-time student worker. The following information will give you an idea of what to expect: 1. You will get dirty, tired, hot, and sweaty, and sometimes cold and wet. If you cannot tolerate these conditions for short periods of time, do not apply for this position. 2. You will be expected to show up on your scheduled days ready to work, on time, and if you don’t, you will be asked to find another position. 3. Holiday work is optional, but you will be required to work regular weekends, equally sharing with other team members. This is usually about three weekends for the whole semester. Your duties on those days will require you to arrive at the greenhouses around 9:00 am both on Saturday and on Sunday and work for approximately 2 hours per day, sometimes as much as 4 hours per day. Weekend work is not optional, it is required. If you cannot work weekends, do not apply for this position. 4. You will learn a lot about the use and care of lawn maintenance equipment. If you do not like to mow, pull weeds, dig, or spray, do not apply for this position.
