Department Summary:
Docents will join the staff of Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum, which tells the story of Martha Berry and Berry College through tours of the historic home, exhibitions in the museum, events on the grounds, and educational programming. Oak Hill was the childhood home of Martha Berry and later became her adult residence. The Martha Berry Museum is on the Oak Hill Estate and serves as a place to further tell the story of the Berry Schools.


Position Summary:
A Docent is an entry-level position that centers around supporting visitor experience at Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum. This position offers exposure to cultural heritage fields and an opportunity to develop transferable skills such as public speaking and customer service.


Essential Functions:
- Provide historical tours to guests of the Oak Hill home, Martha Freeman's Cottage, the Carriage House, and the gardens.
- Maintain museum facilities through daily housekeeping and preventative conservation techniques.
- Manage responsibilities associated with the front desk (phones, ticket sales, etc.) and orient guests throughout their visit.
- Assist with other museum operations and projects as required.

Job Requirements
- Must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours a week with minimal 1.5-hour blocks of time
- Willingness to learn job-specific competencies
- Ability to work independently and part of a team
- Adaptability in response to shifting daily priorities and responsibilities
- Detail-oriented attitude when completing tasks
- Interpersonal skills in working with the public
- Basic proficiency with computers and common administrative software (Outlook, word processors, etc.)
- Driving Requirements: As the museum is not located on Berry’s main campus, student employees are required to organize their own transportation to and from work. Completing certain tasks across the museum property requires the use of museum golf carts and/or vans. At minimum, students are expected to have a provisional license to complete daily museum tasks unless accommodations are needed. Van usage requires a Class C or equivalent license.
