Job Description

This student research job is for a current Berry student to help a community-engaged, grant-funded project that is collecting evidence of racial violence in Rome/Floyd County (esp. lynchings during 1876–1940), evaluating that evidence, and presenting it on a new public website (www.floydremembrance.org). Operating out of the Berry College Department of Religion and Philosophy, the project is Berry College and aims to work closely with the Rome/Floyd County Community Remembrance Project, Rome Area History Museum, One Community United, and other local organizations to find and archive the necessary materials. This job may also involve extended research into Ellen Axson Wilson and Berry College's own history of race (including work on Freemantown and/or Martha Freeman).

Job Requirements

A successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • A current student of Berry College
  • Has experience/coursework and interest in historiography (esp. History)
  • Writes clearly
  • Has experience in digital publishing
  • Can engage personably with a variety of local historians and community members, as well as Berry College faculty, alumni, and staff
  • Willing to communicate virtually with a web developer
  • Able to follow guidance and direction from the Project Director

Preference will be given to a candidate who:

  • Has experience and interest in issues of racial justice/racial history (esp. African-American history)
  • From Rome/Floyd County (or NW Georgia)
  • Has experience/coursework in Communications and/or Religion/Philosophy
  • Capably present research orally to a wide-variety of audiences
