General Position Description:

The Fitness Assistant supports the Fitness Mentor in planning and facilitating fitness and wellness experiences for Neighbors at Amber Grace Community. Fitness Assistants encourage participation, model healthy habits, adapt activities to meet individual abilities, and build meaningful relationships that foster confidence, belonging, and lifelong wellness.

 

 

Fitness Assistants participate in a tiered leadership pathway designed to develop their skills, responsibility, and leadership over time. This structure encourages returning Fitness Assistants to take on increased ownership, mentor newer assistants, and help lead fitness programming.

 

 

Fitness Assistants report to the Director of Programming. 

 

Tier 2: Fitness Assistant (Returning/Intermediate)

For returning students who have already served in the Fitness Assistant 1 role or those with 1+ semester of experience

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Lead warm-ups, cool-downs, stretching, and small-group fitness activities.
  • Assist in planning and adapting fitness activities for varying abilities.
  • Model expectations for Apprentice Fitness Assistants and offer peer support.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to support team decision-making
  • Maintain consistent presence and initiative across sessions

Focus: Initiative, facilitation, and peer mentorship

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a sophomore or higher to apply (email ci@berry.edu to inquire about volunteer opportunities for freshmen)
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from work (located on the mountain campus)
  • Assist the Fitness Mentor during fitness workshops, recreational games, sports, walking groups, and wellness activities.
  • Foster a Christ-like, safe, respectful, and inclusive environment
  • Maintain open communication with all team members and the Director of Programming
  • Participate in team meetings and training, as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with IDD (or strong interest and willingness to learn)
  • Passion for inclusion, health, wellness, and adaptive fitness.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to motivate groups and confidently lead adaptive fitness activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent Amber Grace in a Christ-like, professional manner
  • Shows respect, care and dignity in working with Neighbors
  • Respects confidentiality of Neighbors
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull 25 pounds

 

 

Must have work availability between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-5:00 p.m., Monday- Friday

All employees are required to complete a background check and fingerprinting (employer paid) prior to hire.

A letter of reference from a Berry professor or work supervisor will also be required prior to an official offer of hire.
